Borussia Dortmund legend Marco Reus is set to leave the German side after a long 12-year spell upon the conclusion of his contract in June 2024, confirmed the club in a social media post on Friday.

Reus, 34, has been at Signal Iduna Park for the last 12 years, making him one of the most important players in the club’s history as despite getting offers from multiple teams over the years, the German opted to stay with them.

Reus’s journey with Dortmund goes all the way back to 1995 when he began his career in the club’s youth setup and stayed there till 2005. After that, he had spells at Rot Weiss Ahlen and Borussia Monchengladbach before returning to the club in 2012.

In 424 appearances for the eight-time Bundesliga winners, Reus netted 168 goals and provided 128 assists, making him one of the greatest players in Dortmund’s history.

"One of one. Marco Reus and Borussia Dortmund have reached a mutual understanding that his current contract will not be extended, as both parties will part ways this summer,” BvB said in a club statement.

"Full focus will persist on the remaining league fixtures, alongside our unwavering commitment to fulfilling our dream in the UCL."

Borussia Dortmund remain alive in their pursuit of the UEFA Champions League title as they defeated Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of semi-final at home and are just one showdown away from reaching the final where they will play one of Bayern Munich or Real Madrid.

Reus is focused on winning the European title with the team as it would be a fit farewell for the club legend who served them on 424 different occasions.

"I’m incredibly grateful for and proud of this special time at my club Borussia Dortmund. I have spent more than half of my life at this club and enjoyed every day, even though there have of course been difficult moments too,” Reus said.

"I already know now that I will find it difficult to say goodbye at the end of the season. And yet I’m happy that there is now clarity and that we can focus fully on the very important final games that we still have to play.

"We have a big objective in our sights that we all want to achieve together. To do so, we will need every single one of our unbelievable fans, to whom I would like to express my sincere thanks for their unbelievable support over the years."
