Pakistani wrestler Inam Butt earned a gold medal in the Beach Wrestling World series, routing Ukraine’s Oleksii Yakovchuk 3-0 in the 90kg category final in Rome, Italy.

During an interview with The News International, he was full of gratitude for his feats. “Thanks God, I won five fights on the trot and won the world title,” he shared.

The athlete had edged Turkey’s Omer Faruk Karadeniz 2-1 as well in the quarter final the same day as well, and had gone on to defeat Mihai Nicolae Palaghia of Romania in the semi-final 3-0.

His clash with Yakovchuk in the final was their second face-off as Inam had edged him in the opening fight on Friday as well, and later also handed defeat to Greece’s Georgis Tsaknakis.

While Inam emerged to the top for the Rome event, he won’t be participating for Greece’s World Beach Wrestling World Series in Katerini, to be held from September 10 to 11, owing to visa issues.

Secretary of Pakistan Wrestling Federation (PWF) Arshad Sattar told The News: "We have not got a Greece visa and Inam will not feature in the Greece event. We will write to the United World Wrestling (UWW) to give Inam points for the Greece series as well as for the France series which he missed in July due to visa issues.”

“He deserves the points for the missed events. And if given, I am sure Inam will make it to the final of World Series to be held in Romania on September 25-26,” he added.
