Mike Tyson versus Jake Paul won't be approved as an exhibition bout, as stated by boxing icon Roy Jones Jr.

'Iron Mike' is returning to the ring on July 20 for a single fight against social media sensation Paul, set to take place at the 80,000-seat AT&T Stadium in Texas which will be live-streamed on Netflix.

While an official ruleset for the match has yet to be announced, Jones, who was the last person to step into the ring with Tyson, asserts that it won't simply be a glorified sparring session as speculated by many fans.

“The Jake Paul vs Mike Tyson fight is not an exhibition, I’ve heard it’s been upgraded to a fight," Jones said when speaking with The Lunch Club. "If it’s a fight, it’s very intriguing how it may turn out because Jake Paul has gotten a lot better as a boxer over the days but Mike Tyson even at 58 or however old he is, is still Mike Tyson."

Tyson and Jones sparred for eight rounds in November 2020, yet each round lasted only two minutes and the bout remained unjudged. YouTube sensation Paul also participated in the undercard, competing for only the third time and delivering a brutal knockout to NBA star Nate Robinson.

"When I boxed him, he still punched like Mike Tyson. If he hits anybody square on the chin it’s going to be problematic," Jones added. "I don’t care who it is. I like Jake Paul, he’s a good guy and he’s doing good with his boxing stuff. I think it’s a good promotional situation for him and Mike, they should go really good numbers especially having upgraded to a real fight.

"If Mike comes out and does what Mike normally does, then it’s going to be a tough situation for Jake. If Jake can stay away from him for four or five rounds, then Jake has a chance but he’s going to have to do a lot of manoeuvring to stay away from him." Paul and Tyson have recently started their training camps despite the fight being over three months away.

On the night of the fight, Paul and Tyson will have a 30-year age gap, leaving many fans to believe that 'Iron Mike' should steer clear of the boxing ring at his age. Paul boasts a professional record of 9-1 and recently fought last month, swiftly knocking out lesser-known boxer Ryan Bourland in just one round.
