Real Madrid defeated Sevilla FC 1-0 in a close encounter courtesy of a late strike from the veteran midfielder Luka Modric at the Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday.

Missing seven players, Los Blancos were struggling heavily to break the visitors’ defense but Modric’s late strike earned them a hard-fought win to extend their lead at the top of La Liga.

Sunday’s encounter was an emotional night for all of Madrid fans as they welcomed one of the greatest players of their history, Sergio Ramos, back to the Bernabeu who left as a free agent in 2021.

Ramos was given a heroic welcome by the home fans as they gave him a huge round of applause and chanted the Spaniard’s name when it appeared on the big screen during Sevilla’s team announcement.

The fans kept on lauding the Spaniard throughout the match and Ramos, too, had his moments with Madrid’s players.

One of which was with Madrid’s star attacker, Vinicius Junior, who was man-marking Ramos during a Sevilla corner. The Brazilian got close to his former teammate who kissed his head as a gesture of appreciation.

Madrid’s head coach Carlo Ancelotti talked to the press after the match and lauded Modric who scored the crucial goal and stated how difficult it is for the Croatian to accept the bench role.

"He scored a great goal that allowed us to have another 3 points on the table. He shows everyone how hard it is for me to leave him on the bench," Ancelotti told reporters.

"Not just for the goal he scored, but how he trains. He is an example to the whole squad. It's very complicated to leave him on the bench."

Asked about the Modric's contract, Ancelotti said: "It's complicated. It's hard to manage. I was once a player and went through it in my last year as a professional player.

"I would understand if Modric was a little bit upset if he is not playing. Everyone thinks he is at the end of his career, but I think he doesn't agree with that. He looks to be well, and fresh. He's got legs. He doesn't seem like he is 38."
