The FIFA World Cup 2022 is in the final stages as two matches will be played that will determine the third team and the champions of the mega event.

After 62 have been completed, the third-place play-off between Croatia and Morocco will be played on Saturday, while the grand finale between Argentina and the defending champions France will take place on Sunday.

Meanwhile, there is also an intense race going on between the Golden Boot contenders.

The Golden Boot is given to the FIFA World Cup player who scores the most goals. As of right now, rival finalists Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe are neck-and-neck in the race with five goals each.

Olivier Giroud of France and Julian Alvarez of Argentina are just slightly behind with four goals each, and the latter has the distinction of passing Thierry Henry to become France's all-time leading scorer of men's goals during this FIFA World Cup. However, this is hardly a two-horse race.

Top goal scorers:

Five goals

  • Lionel Messi (Argentina) - 3 assists, 570 minutes played
  • Kylian Mbappe (France) - 2 assists, 477 minutes played

Four goals

  • Julian Alvarez (Argentina) - 0 assists, 364 minutes played
  • Olivier Giroud (France) - 0 assists, 383 minutes played

However, incredibly close Golden Boot races have been decided.

For instance, the 2010 race was ultimately won by Thomas Muller although he, Wesley Sneijder, David Villa, and Diego Forlan were the four players to score five goals while playing in South Africa. Due to his three assists, the German was handed the prize.
