MANCHESTER: Erling Haaland and Phil Foden scored hat-tricks each as Manchester City trounced Manchester United at the Etihad on Sunday.

Haaland created history when his team defeated Manchester United 6-3 to maintain second place in the English Premier League, making him the first player to score a hat-trick in three straight home meetings in the league.

After waiting 52 years for a player to score a hat-trick in the Manchester derby, City only had to wait six minutes for another one to come along when local hero Phil Foden completed his own in the 72nd minute. United then added two goals in the 89th and 90th minutes to give the scoreline some semblance of respectability.

Haaland, who joined City from Borussia Dortmund in the summer, is currently Europe's most dangerous goal scorer with 17 goals in 10 games. Against United, he was outstanding, scoring three goals while also setting up another two.

In the eighth minute, Foden connected with a cross from Bernardo Silva to give City the lead. Haaland quickly opened the scoring by first heading in a corner then converting Kevin de Bruyne's exquisite ball.

The Norwegian then took the lead, allowing Foden a simple opportunity to make it 4-0 before halftime.

After a recent improvement in play, Erik ten Hag's team had a dreadful day as Anthony and Anthony Martial scored goals for United to make it 4-1, then 6-2, and 6-3.

With Haaland in such good shape, City, who are still one point behind Arsenal, remain the favourites to win the league title, which would be their seventh in as many years.
