The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) was introduced in Spanish football in 2018 and was soon adopted by La Liga, the top-flight football league in Spain, and has been in use since then.

VAR is responsible for dealing with all the on-pitch actions that the on-field referee cannot see or miss during the game. Since its introduction in 2018, it has been subjected to criticism by almost all the teams in La Liga.

While VAR has not been able to escape criticism from any team in Spanish top-flight football, it has always been in the headlines every time the top three teams of La Liga — Real Madrid, FC Barcelona and Atletico Madrid — play.

Similarly, Real Madrid took on Sevilla FC on Sunday night at Santiago Bernabeu and recorded a narrow 1-0 win courtesy of a late strike by veteran midfielder Luka Modric.

However, the match once again became the topic of controversy as Los Blancos’ right-back Lucas Vazquez scored the goal in the first half which was overruled by VAR.

After the goal was overturned, the supporters at the Bernabeu started to boo and jeer VAR, highlighting their protest.

As per reliable statistician MisterChip2010, Real Madrid is the team that has been affected the most since the introduction of VAR as they have had 27 goals disallowed.

Here is the list of most goals disallowed by VAR since its introduction in La Liga:

1. Real Madrid — 27 goals

2. Sevilla — 16 goals

3. Atletico Madrid — 14 goals

4. Valencia — 14 goals

5. Real Sociedad — 13 goals

6. Celta de Vigo — 12 goals

Remember, Real Madrid are on top of La Liga with 65 points as they are aiming for their 36th league title. They are followed by Girona who have 59 points and sit in second position.
