Spanish club Real Betis' midfielder William Carvalho was asked to appear in the Seville Courts to record a statement after being accused of allegedly raping a woman in a hotel.

Carvalho, who won the 2016 Euro with Portugal, is accused of drugging and raping a woman in a hotel room in August 2023 in the capital of Seville.

The 31-year-old appeared in the Seville Court and recorded his statement after which he left for Betis training ground where he trained normally with the group.

Carvalho recorded his statement for about half an hour after which the court decided to keep the proceedings open at the Superior Court of Justice of Andalusia (TSJA).

The woman in question, whose name has not been revealed, reported the incident to agents of UFAM (Assistance for Family and Women United) and stated that "she perfectly remembers William's image of her in the bed".

After the two met in a restaurant, they moved to a nightclub where she remembered waking up with clear signs of violence on her body.

Diario AS detailed the statement of Judge María Ángeles Cortes Vida in the ruling of the case.

“Given the state of the proceedings, William Silva de Carvalho is summoned to appear before this Court on February 6, 2024, at 9:30 in order to give a statement as an investigated person with information on his rights and with a warning that if he does not appear his arrest may be ordered, sending the appropriate letter to the UFAM so that it can proceed with the complete affiliation of the investigated as well as his summons to carry out the agreed diligence,” the court stated.

Real Betis confirmed earlier that Carvalho will appear in court to record a statement but they didn’t comment further on the matter.
