Australia’s star opener David Warner shed light on Pakistan’s wayward bowling during the ongoing first Test in Perth.

The home side reached 346-5 at stumps on day one with Warner hitting a brilliant century.

In the lead-up, former paceman Mitchell Johnson questioned whether Warner deserved a hero´s farewell given his recent poor red-ball form and involvement in the 2018 ball-tampering scandal.

The 37-year-old Warner, in his 110th Test, responded in typical swashbuckling fashion, scoring 164 runs while hitting 16 fours and four sixes in his 211-ball knock.

Speaking after the close of play on the first day, Warner said that Pakistan’s bowlers need to bowl at the right line and length.

“I thought we were able to put a bit of pressure on them [Pakistan’s bowlers], especially two debutants,” Warner said.

“Sometimes opposition teams come to Australia and they pitch one or two up and get driven back down the ground, then they get off that length.

“Where if you look at our bowlers, they try and consistently hit that length and they want you to hit straight past them.

“I don’t think I scored one run down the ground today, and that’s when you know you’ve got them off their length.

“That’s what I tried to do from ball one, drop that back leg if I got any width or pull if I can, and then try to get them to bowl to my scoring zones.

“I just don’t think they bowled enough balls in the right area to make us play.”

Australia won the toss and decided to bat in the first Test against Pakistan in Perth on Thursday.

Pacers Aamir Jamal and Khurram Shahzad made their Test debut for Pakistan.

Australia made just one change to the most recent side that took the field in the Ashes finale in August at The Oval, with the fit-again Nathan Lyon replacing Todd Murphy.
