KARACHI: Australia batter Steve Smith has said that he felt and batted the best during the opening ODI of the three-match series against England at the Adelaide Oval on Wednesday.

Smith shined during the first 50-over clash as he smashed an unbeaten 80 off balls against the newly crowned T20 World Cup champions.

Smith's performance, along with half-centuries from Travis Head and David Warner, guided Australia to defeat England by six wickets in Adelaide by chasing down a respectable total.

After the game, the batter claimed it was the best he's felt in six years.

"It was probably the best I've felt in about six years. I was just in really nice positions and I felt really good, I honestly haven't felt that way in six years or so.

"It's been nice to score some runs in that time and we're always looking for perfection, and for me was close to perfection as I will get."

Smith has recently been out of form and participated in just one of Australia's games at the T20 World Cup at home. This has caused some to wonder about Smith's future in white-ball cricket, but his incredible performance against England once again showed how talented he still is.

Smith also disclosed that he has been attempting to refine his technique and rediscover his ideal position. The procedure has been running for a year, and awards have now begun to be paid.

"I've been working on a few things, it's almost been a six-month or 12-month process. The start of last summer, I tried to get my hands back to where they were in 2015. I feel like I'm staying a bit more side-on now and I've got my feet and hands in sync together," Smith explained.

Australia will take on England in the second ODI of the series at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) on Saturday, November 19.
