KARACHI: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Ramiz Raja has wished cricketer-turned-politician a speedy recovery after a gunman shot him in the leg on Thursday in Wazirabad, around 170 kilometres (105 miles) east of Islamabad.

Imran Khan is being treated at Lahore's Shaukat Khanum Hospital after being injured in a gun attack on his party's long march in Wazirabad.

Taking to Twitter, Raja also termed the incident "a very shameful and cowardly act".

The assault left a party activist dead and 13 injured. The suspect involved in the attack is in police custody.

Meanwhile, in a tweet, the Pakistan team captain Babar Azam condemned the attack on the former PM.

"Strongly condemn this heinous attack on Imran Khan. May Allah keep Kaptaan safe and protect our beloved Pakistan, Ameen," he wrote on Twitter.

Khan's former teammate Wasim Akram also reacted after the incident and prayed for Pakistan.

"Deeply disturbed about the events unfolding in Wazirabad. Our prayers with Imran Bhai and everyone there. We as a country must come together and not allow anyone to distort our national unity," he tweeted.

Legendary all-rounder Shahid Afridi also wished Imran a speedy recovery after the attack.

Top-order batter Fakhar Zaman, who is currently in Australia with Pakistan team for T20 World Cup 2022, also prayed for Khan's recovery.
