The numbers behind PSL

The Pakistan Super League (PSL) season nine will begin on February 17 at Gaddafi Stadium Lahore.

As the commencement of the tournament nears, excitement among fans has increased who would be backing their favourite teams to win the title this year.

Let’s take a look at some of the numbers behind PSL over the years.

Teams with most titles

Islamabad United and Lahore Qalandars are the two most successful teams in the PSL history with both teams having two titles each. United was the team to win the inaugural season of the league in 2016, where Misbah-ul-Haq led them to a historic win. Meanwhile, their second title triumph came in 2018, under the leadership of the same captain.

Lahore Qalandars was the only team to not even qualify for the playoffs for the first five seasons of PSL but they proved that comeback is always better than the setback. The Qalandars won as many titles as Islamabad in just two years, 2022 and 2023, under the guidance of no other than Shaheen Shah Afridi as they beat Multan Sultans in the final twice.

Team with most wins in PSL

In 93 matches played across eight seasons, Peshawar Zalmi is the team to have won the most number, 49, of matches. Two-time PSL winners, Islamabad United is second with just two less matches than Zalmi, 47. Lahore Qalandars and Quetta Gladiators, with 39 matches each, are tied with third most wins. Multan Sultans (37) and Karachi Kings (32) are the remaining teams.

Team with the best winning percentage in PSL

Making their PSL debut in 2018 and already having more wins than Karachi Kings, who have been competing from the first season, Multan Sultans emerged as one of the best teams in the tournament who, in four tournaments, has already played three finals. With 37 wins in 67 matches, the Sultans are the team with best winning percentage (55.22) in the tournament’s eight-year old history.
