Former Australian cricketer Stuart Clark on Thursday said that he “would love to” see middle-order batsman Steve Smith captain the national team once again, reported The Sydney Morning Herald.

Clark, a former chief executive of the Big Bash League franchise Sydney Sixers, recalled the 2011-2012 tournament when the Sixers grabbed their maiden title.

In extension to this, Clark said that he wants to see Smith take on the captaincy role for the national side once more.

"Steve has always had such good leadership qualities. He's such a student of the game and it became very clear early why he would be a good leader," Clark said.

"He's been a great leader since he was a kid.

"I'd love to see him captain Australia again. Whether he does or not will be up to Cricket Australia. But if he got the opportunity again he would thrive."

Smith, who was handed a 12-month ban for his role in a ball-tampering scandal in 2018, was removed from his captaincy role which he held since 2015.
