Leylah Fernandez had a successful outing in her opening match of the 2024 Australian Open after a win over Sara Bejlek on Sunday and now the Canadian will relax until her next match.

Fernandez emerged triumphant with a 7-6(5), 6-2 win after an hour and a 36-minute battle at the John Cain Arena.

Talking after her win in Melbourne, Fernandez revealed that she will first relax her body and then watch a show named “Reacher” as it helps her relax mentally.

"First I’m gonna recover. After, I’ll probably watch a show called ‘Reacher.’ it's pretty good one. Maybe I’m gonna crochet a bit. I love crocheting," Fernandez said during her on-court post-match interview.

Fernandez then praised Bejlek for her valiant effort and the fight she put against her. The Canadian also revealed that she has not played against left-handed opponents much due to which this match was somewhat of a challenge.

"It was a tough first-round match against Sara; she is a very, very good young player. I haven't played many lefties, so it was a tough one, but I'm super happy that I was able to play some good points in some important moments, and playing in front of an amazing crowd feels good," Fernandez said.

The Canadian is now set to take on Alycia Parks of the United States in her second round of the Australian Open on Wednesday, January 17. That will be the first meeting of the two on the WTA tour.

Parks defeated Ukraine’s Daria Snigur 2-6, 6-2, and 6-4 in her first match of the Australian Open and would aim to topple the Canadian in the second round to proceed further.
