Lahore Qalandars’ veteran all-rounder David Wiese has backed Shaheen Shah Afridi to lead Pakistan’s national side in the future.

Wiese believes that the Qalandars’ captain, Shaheen, has the leadership skills necessary to make him successful at the international level.

“Shaheen as a captain gives guys freedom to express themselves. He never tells you to go into your shell; he just says to back your skill the whole time. He's got such a good instinct for the game, also. 9/10 times, he makes the right call. The guys back him as captain, and he backs his players 100 percent. We saw in the last game we were in a bit of trouble, and he stepped out there at number six - that's the type of person he is. The guys really respond to a captain like that. He's been phenomenal since he's taken over,” Wiese said on Saturday after the conclusion of the match against Multan.

“100 percent, he's shown over the last two years that his leadership skills are unbelievable and he keeps his players calm. Tactically, he is very good and he’s got a very nice level head on him. I can definitely see him captaining Pakistan over the next couple of years,” he added.

Babar Azam is currently the captain of Pakistan team in all formats of the game.

It must be noted that Lahore Qalandars became the first team to qualify for the playoffs of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) on Saturday after defeating Multan Sultans by 21 runs.

While chasing the 181-run target, Multan were restricted to 159-7 in 20 overs.

Lahore Qalandars, who are the defending champions, will attempt to become the first side to win back-to-back titles.

The closing ceremony and final of PSL 8 will be played on March 19 in Lahore, which will also host play-offs.

The winner will not only lift the Supernova Trophy but will also collect a cheque of Rs120m, while the runners-up will receive a cheque of Rs48m.
