The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced that middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer has been ruled out of the three-match ODI series against New Zealand, scheduled to take kick-off on January 18.

Iyer will miss the series, owing to a back injury. The batter will now travel to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) for additional evaluation.

He was a key player in India's Test series victory against Bangladesh in December of last year. At Mirpur, he scored a tenacious 87 and 29* to help India win the match.

Meanwhile, Rajat Patidar has been named as his replacement for the series. Despite having little international experience, the batter enjoyed a breakthrough IPL season last year. Additionally, he amassed 186 runs at a strike rate of 122.36 in the 2022–23 Vijay Hazare Trophy.

Iyer has suffered injuries throughout his professional career. He sustained a shoulder injury in 2021, which kept him from playing for the following few months.

It is worth noting here that the Men in Blue secured a record 317-run win —  the greatest margin of victory by runs in ODI history —  over Sri Lanka in the last ODI of the series.

India will take on the Kiwis in the opening ODI at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on Wednesday.
