KARACHI: Serena Williams, one of the best tennis players of all time and a sporting icon, is planning to retire after her 23rd Grand Slam singles title.

Williams said she is "evolving away from tennis" and planned to bid adieu to the game after the US Open, which will kick off later this month.

In a Vogue article, Williams announced her retirement: "I have never liked the word retirement."

"Maybe the best word to describe what I’m up to is evolution. I’m here to tell you that I’m evolving away from tennis, toward other things that are important to me.

"A few years ago I quietly started Serena Ventures, a venture capital firm. Soon after that, I started a family. I want to grow that family."

Tennis without the American superstar, who has amassed every possible victory throughout her 27-year career, is tough to comprehend.

Williams will be remembered as one of the greatest competitors in the history of the sport, an athlete with the cleanest serve in women's tennis and a never-ending thirst for victory.

In addition, she will be remembered for speaking out against racism, supporting equal pay for women and men, and sharing her own experiences with the healthcare system as a black woman.
