KARACHI: Ben Stokes, the talismanic all-rounder, has been named England's Test captain, succeeding Joe Root.

The 30-year-old, who previously served as Root's deputy, was the clear favourite to lead a faltering side that had only won one of their previous 17 games.

"I am honoured to be given the chance to lead the England Test team. This is a real privilege, and I'm excited about getting started this summer," Stokes said.

"I want to thank Joe Root for everything he has done for English cricket and for always being a great ambassador for the sport all across the world.

"He has been a massive part of my development as a leader in the dressing room, and he will continue to be a key ally for me in this role," he added.

On June 2, Stokes' debut Test as England's regular captain will take place at Lord's against world champions New Zealand.

It is pertinent to mention here that Stokes has 5,061 runs and 174 wickets in 79 Tests.
