KARACHI: Pakistan’s opening duo of Imam ul Haq and Abdullah Shafique entered the record books on Tuesday when they become the first opening pair in the world in over five decades to score century partnerships in both innings of a Test.

They are also the first Pakistani opening pair to do so against Australia ever.

Imam and Abdullah had earlier scored 105 for the first wicket in first innings of Rawalpindi Test against Australia. Their partnership in 2nd inning was underway when this report was filed.

This is first instance in over 51 years when an opening pair has scored century partnership in both innings of a Test against Australia. The last pair to do so were England’s Geoff Boycott and John Edrich who had scored 107 and 103 at Adelaide in 1971.

While this is first for Pakistan by an opening pair, this is also only 2nd instance when a Pakistani pair scored century partnership in both innings of Test against Australia. The other one was Younis Khan and Azhar Ali who scored hundred partnerships in both innings of Test in Abu Dhabi Test in 2014.

Overall, they’re only third opening pair from Pakistan to score hundred partnership in both innings of a Test – two of such instances involved Abdullah.

The first Pakistani opening pair to score century partnership in both innings of Test was of Taufiq Umar and Imran Farhat who had scored 109 and 134 in Lahore Test against South Africa in2004.

Last year, Abdullah and Abid Ali scored 146 and 151 in Chattogram Test against Bangladesh.
