Veteran Australian spinner Nathan Lyon believes pacer Pat Cummins and star batter Steve Smith are the "best candidates" to lead Australia in the longest format of the game.

Pat Cummins and Steve Smith were interviewed by Cricket Australia to be the next Test captain of the Aussies.

"I think you look at the two guys who have been interviewed by Australia for the two roles, I think they're probably the two best candidates in my eyes," Lyon said as quoted by Espncricinfo.

Nathan Lyon has also played under Cummins in the New South Wales team. He used that experience to praise Cummins for his leadership role.

"Playing under Pat at New South Wales cricket in the one-day set up last year, I think he did a really good job, to be honest with you. I know it's going to be a different kettle of fish, but he's got a lot of senior players around him to support if he does get the nod," he said.

The off-spinner also lauded Steve Smith, who is one of the top batters in the world.

"Then you look at Steve Smith, I think Smithy [Steve Smith] is up there with the best batters in the world. He's got a great cricket mind and I've got no dramas with both of them putting their hand up for the captaincy, to be honest with you," Lyon said.

After Tim Paine resigned from Test captaincy due to a sexting scandal with a female co-worker, Australia are in search of a new Test captain.
