Sunil Gavaskar - profile, career and stats

Sunil Gavaskar is a former Indian batting cricketer who is regarded as one of the greatest openers to ever play the game.

Gavaskar had a tendency to thrash the fast bowlers and surprisingly so, he had an average of 65.45 against the West Indian quartet which consisted of Andy Roberts, Michael Holding, Joel Garner and Colin Croft.

Gavaskar is also considered the bringer of attack and fierceness to the Indian cricket team as captain having led them to the 1984 Asia Cup and the World Championship of Cricket in 1985.

During that era, Gavaskar and Kapil Dev often exchanged the role of captaincy; the most fitting came just six months before Dev led India to their first-ever World Cup title. The country’s next title came years later in 2011 under the captaincy of MS Dhoni.
