Graeme Smith will always be remembered for his brave innings when he came into bat at No.11 with a broken hand against Australia at SCG in 2009 to draw the match. When he walked onto the pitch, there were 8.2 overs left of the play and he along with his partner Makhaya Ntini persevered for 27 balls but Ntini fell with just 10 balls to go. Still, Smith’s bravery became iconic.
Graeme Smith is also part of all four of South Africa’s opening partnerships of 300+ runs. Three of them were with Herschelle Gibbs and one was with Neil McKenzie where the pair added 415 runs for the first wicket against Bangladesh.
Smith’s career came to an end on March 3, 2014, as he announced his retirement during the third Test against Australia.
