PCB’s medical chief resigns following PSL 2021 mishap

Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) Medical and Sport Sciences head, Dr Sohail Saleem, on Saturday resigned from his position after the sixth edition of country’s premier Twenty20 tournament, Pakistan Super League (PSL), was postponed due to a Covid-19 outbreak reported in tournament’s bio-secure bubble.

“Dr Sohail has sent his resignation to Chairman PCB Ehsan Mani,” the PCB spokesperson told the media. He added that the PCB chairman and chief executive Wasim Khan will give the final approval on the resignation.

According to the spokesperson, Dr Sohail will serve a one month notice period if the resignation is accepted. He added that Dr Sohail will meanwhile cooperate with the investigation that will look into the failure of the bio-secure bubble which led to the PSL’s postponement.

Dr Sohail was facing the heat ever since the Board was forced to put the tournament on hold. Some reports suggested that PCB had lost confidence in Dr Sohail’s capabilities in arranging bio-secure environment and was given an option to quit himself or likely get fired by the Board.

Former fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar had also criticized the PCB’s medical panel and appealed the authorities to take strict action against them adding that they played with the lives of people.

“It was the responsibility of medical panel to complete the bio-secure bubble. They didn’t only damage Pakistan cricket, but also put lives in danger,” he had said.

“The kind of medical panel that PCB has include doctors who wouldn’t be allowed to even sit in any hospital. They were so incompetent they could not even comprehend what the bio-secure bubbles are like,” Akhtar added.
