Karachi: Leg-spinner Zahid Mehmood on Thursday said that participating in different Ramzan cricket tournaments in Karachi helped him improve his game and grow a lot.

The 32-year-old, who hails from Dadu, revealed that he had to visit the port city to play cricket as his hometown did not have any facilities. “To come from Dadu and play for Pakistan wasn’t an easy journey,” he said.

“I started playing Ramzan cricket in Karachi because there were no facilities in Dadu. I used to come to the city for competitive cricket and playing in traditional Ramzan tournaments helped me a lot.”

Zahid was born in Dadu and was picked to represent Hyderabad in first-class cricket in 2009. Since then, in 49 first-class matches so far, he has picked up 144 wickets @ 36.76, with 5 five-wicket hauls. Meanwhile in 31 List-A matches, he has picked up 45 wickets.

The player made his debut for Pakistan earlier this year during Twenty20 Internationals series against South Africa and impressed everyone with his performance by grabbing three key wickets.

Having marked his arrival in international cricket with style, Zahid has not set his eyes on doing well in the ongoing HBL Pakistan Super League (PSL). The player is representing Quetta Gladiators in the league and is confident of a good show and comeback by the franchise despite a poor start.

“We are working hard and there is no reason why can’t we come back. We all are eager to do well and have our eyes set on qualifying for the final of PSL,” he said.

“My aim is to do well for my team and help Quetta win with my performance.”

Quetta failed to have a good start to PSL 6 so far as the franchise lost its first two matches against Karachi Kings and Lahore Qalandars and is placed at bottom of the points table.
