Luis Rengifo to undergo season-ending ACL surgery

San Diego Padres second baseman Luis Rengifo will undergo season-ending surgery after scans confirmed a full tear of the ACL in his right knee, the club announced on Monday.

Rengifo suffered the injury during the seventh inning of the Padres’ 7-6 defeat by the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday.

He attempted a throw across his body towards home plate before falling heavily on the infield dirt.

The 29-year-old required assistance to get back to his feet and was subsequently taken off the field on a medical cart.

The injury occurred during a chaotic play near third base, with two Tampa Bay runners in the area at the same time.

Cedric Mullins broke towards home while Rengifo was chasing Taylor Walls. As he attempted to make the throw, Rengifo immediately went down and was unable to continue.

The Padres initially diagnosed the problem as a knee sprain, but further imaging revealed a complete ACL tear, ruling the infielder out for the remainder of the season.

Rengifo began the 2026 campaign with the Milwaukee Brewers before being released by the club on June 23. He struggled during his time in Milwaukee, batting .205 across 57 games.

After joining San Diego, however, Rengifo found improved form and became a productive option in the Padres’ infield. He appeared in 38 games for the club, hitting .292 with four home runs.

His season-ending injury is a significant setback for the Padres as they continue their push through the latter stages of the MLB campaign.
