Xavi Hernandez appointed Netherlands head coach

Xavi Hernandez has been appointed as the Netherlands ’ head coach on a contract running through the 2030 World Cup, the Dutch football federation announced on Wednesday.

The 46-year-old Spaniard will succeed Ronald Koeman and take charge of a national team for the first time in his managerial career. 

Xavi has been without a coaching role since leaving Barcelona in 2024 after three seasons at the Catalan club.

Koeman began his second spell as Netherlands manager in 2023, having previously led the team between 2018 and 2020. During his latest tenure, he guided the Dutch side to the semi-finals of Euro 2024 before overseeing their campaign at this year’s World Cup.

The Netherlands reached the round of 32 at the tournament but were eliminated by Morocco following a penalty shootout. Koeman subsequently stepped down from his position after the World Cup.

Xavi’s appointment marks a significant departure from the federation’s recent preference for Dutch coaches. He will become the Netherlands’ first foreign manager since Austria’s Ernst Happel, who guided the team at the 1978 World Cup.

The former Barcelona and Spain midfielder will now begin preparations for his first international assignment, with his debut set to come against Germany in the Nations League on September 24th.

Xavi enjoyed a successful playing career with Barcelona and Spain, winning numerous major honours before moving into management.

It is pertinent to mention that his appointment represents a new chapter for the Netherlands as they prepare for the 2030 World Cup.
