France midfielder Paul Pogba suffered a fresh thigh injury on Tuesday during the first day of Monaco’s training camp in England, raising further concerns over his fitness and future at the Ligue 1 club.
The 2018 World Cup winner sustained an injury to his left thigh as Monaco trained at the English national football centre at St George’s Park.
The setback came just days after the French side defeated Liverpool in a friendly on Sunday.
The 33 year old had recently returned to group training after a prolonged absence caused by problems with his right knee. He has featured for just one half of football during Monaco’s pre-season preparations so far.
According to several sources close to the situation, the latest injury means Pogba remains some way short of the fitness level required to start the new Ligue 1 campaign.
The 2018 French World Cup winner joined Monaco after serving an 18-month suspension from football as part of a four-year doping ban. However, his return to competitive action has been disrupted by injuries and limited playing time.
Pogba made only six Ligue 1 appearances for Monaco last season, accumulating just 115 minutes on the pitch.
His latest setback now casts further uncertainty over his ability to contribute regularly as Monaco prepare for the new season.
It is pertinent to mention that the club are yet to provide a detailed assessment of the injury or confirm how long Pogba is expected to remain sidelined.
