Hunter Greene placed on 15-day injury list with renewed elbow soreness

CINCINNATI: Cincinnati Reds right-hander Hunter Greene has been placed on the 15-day injured list after suffering renewed soreness in his right elbow, dealing another setback to the club's pitching staff.

Greene, who had made only five starts since returning from injury, felt discomfort during a side session on Tuesday.

Reds president of baseball operations Nick Krall said the 26-year-old underwent an MRI scan on Wednesday and will meet specialists later this week. The club has not yet revealed the scan results or given a timeline for his return.

"We don't have a timetable yet," Krall said. "We just have to wait until we get the results."

The injured list move has been backdated to Sunday.

Greene had only recently returned after starting the season on the 60-day injured list following surgery in March to remove bone chips from his right elbow.

Since making his season debut on July 4th, he has gone 2-2 with a 6.83 ERA in five starts.

The latest injury adds to a difficult spell for the Reds' ace. Since making his Major League debut in 2022, Greene has never made more than 26 starts in a season.

Last year, he was limited to 19 appearances after spending time on the injured list with a groin injury. In 2024, he missed six weeks because of soreness in the same right elbow, while he also had two injury spells in 2023 due to hip pain.

Despite receiving trade interest earlier this summer, Cincinnati decided to keep Greene, hoping he would lead the starting rotation alongside All-Star right-hander Chase Burns.
