Cameron Norrie advances to Canadian Open third round

MONTREAL: Britain's Cameron Norrie booked his place in the third round of the Canadian Open with a comfortable straight-sets 6-3, 6-3 victory over Peru's Ignacio Buse here at IGA Stadium on Wednesday.

The British number two produced a composed display to defeat world number 33 in one hour and 29 minutes, continuing the encouraging run of form he has shown in recent weeks.

Norrie arrived in Montreal with renewed confidence after ending a six-match losing streak by reaching the semi-finals of the Los Cabos Open last week.

He carried that momentum into the ATP Masters 1000 event, having already overcome Argentina's Camilo Ugo Carabelli in his opening-round encounter.

The 30-year-old made a strong start against Buse, securing an early break of serve before holding comfortably to take the opening set 6-3.

The second set proved more competitive as Buse managed to level the contest at 2-2 with his first break of the match.

However, Norrie responded immediately by breaking back and then showed resilience to fend off three break points in a crucial service game, maintaining control of the encounter.

Buse's challenge was further hampered when he required a medical timeout during the second set. Although the Peruvian attempted to continue, he was unable to mount a sustained comeback as Norrie remained solid from the baseline and dictated the key exchanges.

The Briton sealed victory with his second match point to advance to the last 32, where a sterner test awaits against Australia's world number seven Alex de Minaur.

De Minaur, who married Britain's Katie Boulter in July, will be aiming to halt Norrie's progress before teaming up with his wife in the doubles competition at the upcoming US Open.
