Former WWE superstar lambasts Argentina after FIFA World Cup final defeat

Former World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) superstar and current commentator Stu Bennett, famously known as Wade Barrett, on Monday took a dig at Lionel Messi's Argentina following their 1-0 defeat at the hands of eventual champions Spain in the FIFA World Cup 2026 final.

The South American nation, defending the coveted title they won for the third time in 2022 by defeating France in an enthralling final, were completely outclassed by the European champions in the summit clash of this year's mega event, as they failed to register a single shot on target in regulation time.

Argentina then sustained a major setback just three minutes into the first half of the extra time as their semi-final hero Enzo Fernandez was shown a red card for a rough tackle, which saw Spain centre-back Pau Cubarsi flip and land awkwardly on his back.

With the opposition down to 10 men, the 2010 champions made the most of the opportunity and netted the opener just three minutes later through Ferran Torres, who buried the ball into the net after it was deflected off Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.

The defending champions then made multiple attempts to net the equaliser, but Spain's defence kept them at bay until the final whistle.

Commenting on Argentina's struggles in the summit clash, five-time WWE Intercontinental champion Barrett shared he was "still laughing" at their inability to register any shot on target during the regulation time.

"Still laughing at 120 mins of football and zero shots on goal," Barrett wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

The WWE commentator further asserted that Argentina, whom he termed the "worst ever team to make a final", would not have gone past the Last 16 as he criticised the refereeing decisions throughout the 48-team mega event.

"With a vaguely competent ref applying the laws of the game as intended, Argentina's thug-ball wouldn't have got past the last 16. Worst team to ever make a final," Barrett added.
