Kylian Mbappe wins second World Cup Golden Boot

France captain Kylian Mbappe became the first player to win multiple FIFA World Cup Golden Boot awards after Spain beat Argentina 1-0 in the final on Sunday in East Rutherford.

Mbappe scored 10 goals and provided three assists in six matches of the World Cup.

The Real Madrid forward was behind Lionel Messi before scoring twice in France's 6-4 loss to England on Saturday in the third-place match.

His only competition still active was Messi, who was searching for his first Golden Boot along with trying to help Argentina to a second consecutive World Cup.

Messi and Argentina knocked out Mbappe and France on penalty kicks in the 2022 final in Qatar.

Argentina were toothless against Spain's stalwart defence and had just two total shots in the final, both coming late in the match.

Messi went scoreless for the third consecutive match. He had scored eight goals across the three group-stage matches, the round of 32 and the round of 16.

At 27, Kylian Mbappe can already call himself the greatest goal-scorer in World Cup history.

His two second-half goals on Saturday pushed him past Messi for the all-time World Cup record with 22 in just 22 matches.

Messi, who broke Miroslav Klose's all-time World Cup goals record earlier in the tournament before Kylian Mbappe later surpassed it, finished on 21 goals and may have played the final World Cup match of his career at the age of 39.

Mbappe scored 10 goals at this World Cup, with eight coming in four braces against Iraq, Senegal, Sweden and England. In doing so, he became the first player since Germany's Gerd Müller in 1970 to reach double figures in a single tournament.
