ICC World Cup Qualifier winner to gain direct entry to 2027 main round: report
Runners-up and semi-finalists of Qualifiers to feature in Super Series for remaining World Cup berth
KARACHI: The winner of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Qualifier will earn a direct entry into the main round of the mega event by escaping the preliminary stage, called the Super Series, international media reported on Friday.
According to a report by a renowned cricket news website, while the winner of the 10-team traditional qualifying event will get entry into the main round of the mega event, the teams finishing second, third and fourth will contest in the Super Series, introduced by the International Cricket Council (ICC) earlier this week as it revamped the format of the ODI World Cup.
The report further suggested that the qualifying event will be staged early 2027, with the venues yet to be finalised.
It further shared that the format of the Qualifier is likely to remain the same as it was for the 2023 edition of the mega event, with 10 teams splitting into two groups of five, followed by a Super Six.
Under the revised formula, the tournament will continue to feature 14 teams, but will adopt a new three-stage format aimed at creating more competitive matches and improving the experience for both players and fans.
As per the new qualification model, the top eight teams in the ODI rankings by the end of September 2026, along with two of the three co-hosts, South Africa and Zimbabwe, will earn direct entry into the main round.
The 11th place will be secured by the winner of the 10-team Qualifier, while the remaining 12th berth has been reserved for the triumphant side of the Super Series, in which the three next-best placed sides of the aforementioned qualifying event will compete in a round-robin format.
Meanwhile, Round Two of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2027 will consist of two groups of six teams each. The top three teams from each group, along with the highest-ranked remaining side across both groups, will advance to the Super Seven stage. From there, the top four teams will qualify for the semi-finals before the winners contest the final.
