Reigning champion Carlos Alcaraz set for Cincinnati return

Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz is set to make a return from a wrist injury at next month’s Cincinnati Open after entering the tournament, organisers said.

The 23-year-old Spaniard was unable to defend his French Open title and also missed Wimbledon as he was recovering from a wrist issue.

"My recovery is going well and I'm feeling much better, but unfortunately I'm still not ready to compete, which is why I have to withdraw from the grass-court swing at Queen's and Wimbledon," Alcaraz posted on Instagram to confirm his withdrawal on May 19.

"They are two truly special tournaments for me and I will miss them a lot.

"We'll keep working to come back as soon as possible."

But the seven-time Grand Slam champion is set to defend his title in Cincinnati next month, marking his return for the first time since opting out of the Barcelona Open in April.

Alcaraz won last year's Cincinnati Open crown after Jannik Sinner retired from the final due to injury and will be trying to regain momentum ahead of the defence of his US Open title.

World number one Sinner will also be there in Cincinnati to challenge Carlos Alcaraz.

The Italian has won all five ATP Masters 1000 events played in 2026 and successfully defended his title at this month’s Wimbledon, with Carlos sidelined by injury.

Sinner, who defeated Alcaraz in last year's final to become the first Italian man to claim a Wimbledon singles title, joined an elite group of players to defend the title in the professional era at this year's tournament.

The Cincinnati Open will be held from August 13 to 23.
