Belgium's Thomas Meunier joins Sunderland on two-year deal

Belgium's Thomas Meunier has completed a move to Sunderland after signing a two-year contract with the Premier League club on Wednesday, following the expiry of his deal with French outfit Lille.

The 34-year-old defender joins on a free transfer after enjoying a solid campaign in Ligue 1, where he made 35 appearances across all competitions for Lille last season.

His arrival adds considerable experience to Sunderland's squad as the club prepares for the new Premier League season.

Speaking after sealing the switch, Meunier expressed his excitement about the opportunity to play in England's top flight.

"When I got the call from Sunderland asking me to be part of the project, of course it's the Premier League - it's even bigger than European football."

The experienced full-back brings an impressive pedigree, having previously spent four years at both Paris Saint-Germain and Borussia Dortmund.

During his career, Meunier has established himself as one of Belgium's most dependable defenders, earning 83 international caps and representing his country at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

His signing marks another important addition for Sunderland as they look to strengthen their squad with proven top-level talent ahead of the forthcoming campaign.

It is pertinent to mention that Harry Winks has completed a permanent move to Serie A side Cagliari following Leicester City's relegation to League One.

The 30-year-old midfielder leaves Leicester after making 109 appearances in all competitions since joining the club in 2023.

He featured 34 times in the Championship last season, playing a key role in midfield despite the Foxes' disappointing campaign, which ended with relegation.
