England are increasingly confident that Declan Rice will be fit enough to start Wednesday's World Cup semi-final against Argentina after showing encouraging signs of recovery following illness.

The Arsenal midfielder was substituted at half-time during England's quarter-final victory over Norway after struggling with a sickness bug in the days leading up to the match.

Rice had missed two training sessions before the game and was unable to complete the full 90 minutes due to his condition.

Speaking after the win, England head coach Thomas Tuchel admitted Rice had endured a difficult few days, revealing the midfielder had spent much of the build-up confined to bed.

Tuchel explained that it had always been the plan to limit Rice's involvement, believing he would not have been capable of lasting the entire match.

Despite those concerns, Rice's condition has reportedly improved significantly since Saturday.

While the England medical staff have yet to make a final decision, there is growing optimism that the 26-year-old will be available from the start when the Three Lions face Argentina in Atlanta.

England trained at their base in Kansas City on Monday and are scheduled to hold one final session on Tuesday before travelling to Atlanta.

Tuchel is expected to address the media alongside three members of his squad ahead of the highly anticipated semi-final.

The coaching staff are also assessing the fitness of Nico O'Reilly and Ezri Konsa, both of whom were forced off during the win over Norway.

Marc Guehi completed the full 120 minutes despite managing a tight hamstring, while Jarell Quansah remains suspended after his red card against Mexico in the last 16 and is unavailable for selection.
