Norway receive heroes' welcome after historic World Cup campaign

OSLO: Norway received a heroes' welcome from more than 100,000 supporters on Monday, as fans turned the disappointment of the national team's World Cup quarter-final exit into a celebration for its historic campaign.

Norway's memorable campaign came to an end on Saturday after a 2-1 extra-time defeat to England in the quarter-finals, denying the Nordic nation a place in the last four.

Despite the setback, thousands of fans gathered in the capital under the summer sunshine to honour the team's historic run.

Large crowds assembled at the Royal Palace early in the afternoon, with unofficial estimates putting attendance at more than 100,000 people.

The players arrived in Oslo to a traditional water cannon salute before beginning a homecoming parade through the city.

Supporters filled the palace square and lined Karl Johans gate, the capital's main thoroughfare, as the squad attended an audience with King Harald.

Following the royal reception, the team appeared on the palace steps to greet the crowds, with members of the Royal Guard standing at attention behind them.

Manchester City striker Erling Haaland was absent from the final stage of the celebrations after leaving early to catch a flight.

His departure meant he was unable to join his teammates for a final "Viking row" on the palace steps alongside the thousands of supporters gathered below.

It is pertinent to mention that the celebration was led by Crown Prince Haakon, who took his place on the drums.
