England announce playing XI for ODI series opener against India

LONDON: The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) on Monday announced its national men's team's lineup for the first ODI of the three-match home series against India, scheduled to be played at Edgbaston in Birmingham on July 14.

Middle-order batter Harry Brook will lead the Three Lions in the upcoming fixture, which will be their first ODI appearance since suffering a 3-0 series whitewash away against New Zealand in October-November last year.

22-year-old batting all-rounder Jacob Bethell will open for England alongside Ben Duckett, while the batting maestro will round up the home side's top order.

Skipper Brook will bat at No.4, followed by his predecessor Jos Buttler, who will be making his 200th appearance for England in the longer format, while all-rounders Sam Curran and Will Jacks will make up their middle order.

Right-arm speedster Jofra Archer will spearhead England's fast-bowling attack, which also features Josh Tongue and Curran, while Jacks, Dawson and Adil Rashid will provide the spin bowling options.

For the unversed, although England are coming off a series whitewash, the home side would be high on confidence, courtesy of their 4-0 triumph over India in the preceding T20I series.

In ODIs, however, India recently registered a crushing 3-0 whitewash over Afghanistan at home last month and would aim to continue their winning run in the format.
