Is Ravichandran Ashwin England's next Test head coach?

Former India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin is not in contention to become England's next Test head coach despite widespread speculation circulating on social media.

Rumours emerged after several unverified posts claimed that Ashwin was in talks with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) following Brendon McCullum's departure as England's red-ball coach.

McCullum has stepped down from the Test coaching role but will continue to oversee England's white-ball teams in One-Day Internationals and Twenty20 Internationals, leaving the Test position vacant.

With one of cricket's most prestigious coaching roles now available, a number of high-profile names have been linked with the job. Ashwin's name unexpectedly gained traction online after claims surfaced that he had met ECB officials in the United States to discuss the role.

However, there is no credible evidence to support those claims.

The reported meetings in the United States were understood to be related to commercial discussions surrounding the proposed European T20 Premier League and had no connection with England's coaching setup.

According to the media reports, sources close to the ECB have dismissed the speculation, confirming that the board has neither approached Ashwin nor held any discussions with the former India spinner regarding the vacant position. 

As things stand, the reports remain unfounded and are based solely on social media speculation.

Meanwhile, Ashwin has remained actively involved in cricket through his digital platforms, where he has been analysing India's ongoing Test tour of England and sharing his views on the series.

While Ashwin's name continues to trend online, the list of genuine contenders appears to be very different. Former England head coach Andy Flower is reportedly the leading candidate to replace McCullum.

Flower, who guided England to the top of the ICC Test rankings during his previous tenure, is believed to be open to returning if he is permitted to continue his Indian Premier League commitments with Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

England Lions head coach Andrew Flintoff and former Afghanistan head coach Jonathan Trott have also been linked with the role, with both possessing extensive coaching experience.

At present, there are no credible reports connecting Ashwin with England's Test coaching vacancy. The former India spinner has never held a professional coaching position, and the claims linking him with the ECB remain without foundation.

England are expected to appoint a new Test head coach before their upcoming home Test series against Pakistan, with preparations for the Ashes also a key priority.
