Australia forward Mitch Duke retires from international football

Australia forward Mitch Duke has announced his retirement from international football, ending a distinguished career with the Socceroos that saw him earn 50 caps and represent his country at the highest level for more than a decade.

The 35-year-old bows out after playing a significant role for Australia during one of the most successful periods in the national team's recent history.

Duke was a key figure at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where he scored the decisive headed goal in a 1-0 victory over Tunisia, securing Australia's first World Cup win in 12 years and helping the Socceroos reach the knockout stages.

He also made an important contribution during Australia's qualifying campaign for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Duke netted the winning goal against Saudi Arabia in a crucial qualifier last year, although he was ultimately left out of the final squad selected for the tournament in North America.

Confirming his decision in a statement released on Saturday, Duke reflected on his journey with the national team and the pride he felt every time he represented Australia.

"After a lot of reflection, the time has come for me to officially announce my retirement from international football," Duke said.

"As a kid growing up in Australia, I dreamed of wearing the green and gold just once. To have gone on to represent my country 50 times is a dream come true 50 times over, and a privilege I never took for granted.

"While I will cherish every memory, scoring for Australia at the 2022 FIFA World Cup remains the absolute highlight of my career. It has been the greatest honour of my life to pull on the Socceroos jersey and represent our nation."

Duke departs as one of Australia's experienced international forwards, leaving behind a legacy defined by commitment, leadership and memorable performances on the biggest stage.
