The San Antonio Spurs have signed French star Victor Wembanyama to a multi-year contract extension, securing the services of one of the NBA's brightest young talents after another outstanding season.

While the Spurs did not disclose the financial details of the agreement, multiple reports have stated that the extension is a five-year, $252 million maximum rookie-scale contract with a player option for the fifth and final season.

"Spurs family, I'm here to stay. Whatever it takes," the 22-year-old wrote on X(formerly known as Twitter) following the announcement.

Wembanyama enjoyed a remarkable campaign, becoming the youngest player in NBA history to win the Defensive Player of the Year award.

He also played a key role in leading San Antonio to the NBA Finals, where the Spurs were beaten by the New York Knicks in five games.

The former first overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft produced career-best numbers during the regular season, averaging 25.0 points, 11.5 rebounds and 3.1 assists across 64 games.

The 7ft 4in Frenchman also topped the league with 3.08 blocks per game and averaged 1.03 steals, becoming only the seventh player in NBA history to record at least 25 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks per game over an entire season.

According to reports, the lucrative extension is one of the richest rookie-scale contracts in NBA history, underlining the franchise's long-term commitment to Wembanyama as the centrepiece of its future.

Since arriving in San Antonio, Wembanyama has rapidly established himself as one of the league's premier two-way players, with his elite shot-blocking, versatility and offensive production making him one of the NBA's most dominant young stars.
