CM Punk set for extended WWE Championship reign

CHICAGO: CM Punk is reportedly set for an extended run as WWE's Undisputed Champion following his historic title victory on Monday Night Raw.

The Chicago native made a dramatic return to WWE television by replacing Cody Rhodes in the Undisputed Championship match against Sami Zayn before defeating the reigning champion to capture the title for the first time in 13 years.

Punk is expected to spend the majority of his championship reign on Friday Night SmackDown, while continuing to make occasional appearances on Raw when required.

His first appearance as champion has already been confirmed for this week's edition of SmackDown, which will take place at the Paycom Center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

The title victory marks the eighth world championship of Punk's WWE career, further strengthening the legacy of one of the company's most accomplished performers.

Since making his WWE debut in 2006, he has enjoyed multiple championship reigns, including his iconic 434-day WWE Championship run between 2011 and 2013, one of the longest world title reigns of the modern era.

Punk's triumph has also intensified speculation over a blockbuster clash with Cody Rhodes at SummerSlam. 

Rhodes had originally been scheduled to challenge Sami Zayn before an unexpected turn of events paved the way for Punk's return and eventual championship success.

Meanwhile, Sami Zayn has vowed to respond after losing the Undisputed Championship, while former world champion Gunther remains firmly in the title picture.

Gunther's recent attack on Rhodes proved pivotal in creating the opportunity that allowed Punk to step into the championship match and emerge victorious.

For the unversed, WWE SummerSlam 2026 will be held across two nights on Saturday, August 1, and Sunday, August 2, at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
