Egypt extend Hossam Hassan's contract after historic World Cup run

CAIRO: The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) has confirmed that national team head coach Hossam Hassan will remain in charge after approving a contract extension following Egypt's encouraging FIFA World Cup campaign.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the EFA announced that its board had also agreed to extend the contract of team director Ibrahim Hassan, ensuring continuity for the national team's coaching staff.

"EFA President Hany Abo Rida announced that the association's board had approved the renewal of contracts for Egypt national team head coach Hossam Hassan and team director Ibrahim Hassan," the EFA said in a statement.

Hassan took charge of the Pharaohs in February 2024 and quickly guided the side to the semi-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, earning praise for restoring confidence within the squad.

Earlier this year, the former Egypt striker revealed that he had been managing the national team without a formal contract since February 2026, despite continuing to oversee preparations and competitive fixtures.

Egypt enjoyed a memorable World Cup under Hassan, securing their first-ever victory at the tournament during his tenure with a 3-1 win over New Zealand in their Group G encounter.

The Pharaohs continued their impressive run by defeating Australia in a penalty shootout in the round of 32, marking the country's first victory in a World Cup knockout match.

Their campaign eventually came to an end in a dramatic 3-2 defeat to defending champions Argentina in the last 16, narrowly missing out on a place in the quarter-finals after a spirited performance.
