ICC penalise West Indies after historic Test series win over Sri Lanka
West Indies found two overs short of target after time allowances were taken into consideration, says ICC
DUBAI: The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Wednesday penalised the West Indies men's cricket team for maintaining a slow-over rate in their recently concluded second Test of the home series against Sri Lanka in North Sound.
According to the apex body, the hosts were ruled to be two overs short of the target and were thus fined 10 per cent of their match fee and were also docked two ICC World Test Championship (WTC) points.
The sanction was levelled by ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees Javagal Srinath after time allowances were taken into consideration.
Under the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) playing conditions, teams are docked one championship point for every over they fall short.
In addition, the ICC Code of Conduct stipulates that players are fined 5 per cent of their match fee for each over short, with the maximum penalty capped at 50 per cent.
The sanction brought West Indies' WTC 2025-27 points tally down to 18 and winning percentage to 15, but they remained eighth in the standings ahead of bottom-ranked Pakistan, whom they will host in July-August for a two-match series.
West Indies captain Roston Chase pleaded guilty to the offence, besides accepting the proposed sanction, and thus eradicated the need for a formal hearing, while on-field umpires Paul Reiffel and Ahsan Raza, third umpire Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid and fourth umpire Deighton Buttler levelled the charge.
It is pertinent to mention that the second Test between West Indies and Sri Lanka ended in a draw, and since the hosts won the opening fixture by an innings and 217 runs, they registered their first series triumph over the Island nation in the longest format after a 23-year wait.
