ATLANTA: Lionel Messi returned to the top of the FIFA World Cup Golden Boot standings after producing another decisive performance in Argentina's dramatic last-16 victory over Egypt here at Atlanta Stadium on Tuesday.

The 39-year-old forward continued his outstanding form by scoring once and providing an assist as Argentina came from two goals down to claim a thrilling 3-2 victory and secure a place in the quarter-finals.

Messi's evening did not begin as planned after he failed to convert a penalty, while Egypt took control of the contest by establishing a 2-0 advantage.

However, the Argentina captain responded in trademark fashion, leading his side's fightback when the pressure was at its highest.

He set the comeback in motion in the 79th minute with a pinpoint delivery that was headed home by Cristian Romero.

Four minutes later, Messi drew Argentina level with a clinical finish, before Enzo Fernandez completed the turnaround in stoppage time to send the defending champions into the last eight.

The goal was Messi's eighth of the tournament, while his assist took his overall tally to nine direct goal contributions.

Those numbers lifted him above Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland in the race for the Golden Boot, underlining his influence on Argentina's World Cup campaign.

Messi has consistently delivered in crucial moments throughout the tournament, combining creativity with goals as Argentina continue their title defence.

His leadership and composure have once again proved invaluable for Lionel Scaloni's side, who have relied on their captain to produce when it matters most.
