World Cup 2026: Nestor Lorenzo rues Colombia's missed chances after Switzerland defeat

VANCOUVER: Colombia coach Nestor Lorenzo admitted his side paid the price for failing to convert their chances after they were eliminated from the FIFA World Cup by Switzerland in a 4-3 penalty shootout following a goalless draw after extra time here at BC Place on Tuesday.

Despite dominating large spells of the contest and creating numerous opportunities, Colombia were unable to find a breakthrough before their World Cup campaign came to a heartbreaking end from the penalty spot.

Reflecting on the defeat, Lorenzo insisted his players had produced a performance worthy of more, but accepted that their lack of finishing proved decisive.

"What we lacked, without doubt, was scoring a goal," Lorenzo said.

The Colombian manager described the Round of 16 encounter as a tightly contested tactical battle but felt his side had shown greater attacking intent throughout the 90 minutes.

"We knew it was going to be a very closed match, very tactical, very even. Even so, I think we deserved a little more in the 90 minutes because of the intentions we had and the shots we took."

Lorenzo also defended his substitutions, explaining that both Jhon Arias and Luis Suarez were withdrawn to avoid the risk of a second yellow card and because fatigue had begun to take its toll as the match wore on.

"We were afraid that with one late challenge we could be left with one less player. And energy too," he said.

Colombia finished the match with 15 attempts on goal but were repeatedly denied by Swiss goalkeeper Gregor Kobel before falling short in the shootout.

"We had 15 attempts. That is a lot, and not scoring, you pay for it. There is nothing to reproach. Sometimes the ball goes in and sometimes it doesn't," he concluded.
