Argentina fight back from two goals down to eliminate Egypt and reach FIFA World Cup quarter-finals

Argentina came from two goals down to complete one of the greatest comebacks in FIFA World Cup history, defeating Egypt 3-2 at Atlanta Stadium in Georgia on Tuesday to reach the quarterfinals.

The comeback marked Argentina's first in the World Cup knockout round since a 2-1 extra-time defeat of Mexico in 2006.

Argentina will face either Colombia or Switzerland in the quarter-finals, with the two teams meeting later today.

Argentina began their comeback in the 79th minute when Cristian Romero powered a header into the net after being set up by Lionel Messi.

Four minutes later, Messi struck to save Argentina from embarrassment. Lautaro Martinez was involved in the build-up, and it bounced off substitute Gonzalo Montiel into Lionel's path, who put the ball inside.

Enzo Fernandez scored the winner in the second minute of stoppage time to send the defending champions into the quarterfinals.

Yasser Ibrahim stunned Argentina fans with the first effort of the match, heading home to put Egypt ahead in the 15th minute.

The ball was played into the penalty area from deep and Ibrahim got ahead of Lisandro Martinez, making a perfect connection to head home.

Soon after the goal, Argentina were awarded a penalty when Nicolás Tagliafico was brought down on the left inside the area by Haissem Hassan.

However, Messi failed from the spot and missed a chance to score. Egypt goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir flung himself to his left and got two hands to the ball to push the spot-kick away.

Mostafa Ziko doubled the lead for Egypt in the 67th minute of the match. He has had one goal ruled out, but this time he has the ball in the net again.
