CM Punk defeats Sami Zayn to win Undisputed WWE Championship on Raw

CHICAGO: CM Punk made a sensational return to Monday Night Raw by defeating Sami Zayn to become the new Undisputed WWE Champion in a shocking main event that dramatically altered the road to SummerSlam on Monday at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont Illinois.

The night's original main event was set to feature Zayn defending the Undisputed WWE Championship against Cody Rhodes.

However, plans changed after Rhodes was brutally assaulted backstage by Gunther, leaving the former champion medically unable to compete. WWE officials later confirmed that Punk would replace Rhodes in the title match, sending the Chicago crowd into a frenzy.

Competing in his hometown for the first time since WrestleMania weekend, Punk immediately seized the opportunity. The veteran engaged in a hard-fought battle with Zayn, who had captured the championship only nine days earlier at Night of Champions.

The contest featured several momentum swings as both superstars exchanged signature offence and near falls. Zayn showcased his resilience, repeatedly escaping Punk's attacks, while Punk relied on his experience to stay in control during the latter stages of the contest.

The decisive moment came when Punk connected with his trademark Go To Sleep (GTS), securing the three-count to end Zayn's brief title reign and claim the Undisputed WWE Championship.

The victory marked Punk's eighth recognised world championship in WWE and his first reign with the Undisputed WWE Title in 15 years, capping off one of the most memorable returns of his illustrious career.

Following the match, Punk celebrated with the Chicago faithful while holding the championship high above his head, closing Raw on an emotional note.

Meanwhile, Rhodes' earlier attack by Gunther and Punk's title triumph have fuelled speculation that WWE is building towards a blockbuster championship clash involving Punk and Rhodes at SummerSlam.
