Arthur Fery stuns Grigor Dimitrov to reach maiden Wimbledon quarter-finals

LONDON: British wildcard Arthur Fery produced the biggest victory of his career by defeating experienced Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov in a gripping five-set contest here at Center Court on Monday, securing a place in the Wimbledon quarter-finals with a 7-5, 3-6, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(7) triumph.

The 23-year-old, ranked 114 in the world, battled for almost four hours under fading light to overcome the 35-year-old former world number three.

Roared on by a passionate home crowd, Fery displayed remarkable composure and resilience before sealing victory with two crucial aces in the deciding tie-break.

The win makes Fery the first men's wildcard since Nick Kyrgios in 2014 to reach the Wimbledon quarter-finals.

He will now face ninth seed Flavio Cobolli, who defeated Australia's fifth seed Alex de Minaur 7-5, 7-6(4), 6-3.

Fery praised the home support that carried him through the contest.

"The support was phenomenal," he said. "First time on this court, five sets against an absolute legend of the game, I grew up five minutes from here, I grew up coming to watch matches on this court."

Fery added that having Roger Federer watching from the Royal Box made the support he received even more special.

"We’ve got probably the greatest of all time watching over there. I saw him and now playing here in front of all you guys and winning and having the support is unbelievable," Fery added.

Fery reflected on another hard-fought victory after surviving a five-set battle in the previous round.

"It’s been the story of the tournament for me, I was really close to losing in the last round and again today. A break down in the fourth, just trying to keep fighting, to have a good attitude and it paid off," Fery concluded.
