'Try to ignore negative things': Babar Azam reveals approach to criticism

LAHORE: Pakistan's newly-appointed Test captain Babar Azam on Monday shared that he tries to ignore negative comments as he revealed his approach to criticism, saying he prefers to focus on constructive feedback and apply advice that can improve his game.

Babar, who has represented Pakistan in 62 Tests, 143 ODIs and 145 T20Is since making his international debut in 2015, often faces criticism over his captaincy skills and batting approach despite being one of the most consistent run-scorers for the Green Shirts across formats.

Consequently, the 31-year-old addressed the concerns regarding his batting approach, sharing that he does not think about himself and instead thinks about what the team requires from him.

"Whenever I go out to bat, I do not think only about myself. I think about the responsibility and what the team requires from me," said Babar in an exclusive interview on Straight Drive with Salman Butt.

"If the team needs me to play quickly in a Test match, I do that. If the situation requires defensive batting, I play that way. My focus is always on what is best for the team," he added.

Babar then went on to reveal his approach towards criticism, stating that he acknowledges that everyone is entitled to an opinion and thus takes on board constructive advice but remains unfazed by negative comments.

"Everyone has their own point of view and we cannot change that. We listen to good things and if something is useful, we try to apply it. Otherwise, we try to ignore the negative things."
