Several national cricketers expected to miss CPL 2026 due to domestic One-Day tournament, sources say
LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has decided to organise a four-team domestic One-Day tournament in August as part of its plans to help national players prepare for next year's ICC Men's Cricket World Cup, sources told Geo Super on Monday.
According to insiders, the cricket board is currently engaged in player selection for the four participating teams in the One-Day tournament, adding that it has informed them of its decision to hold the event in August.
Since PCB's revamped central contract structure mandates that white-ball specialist players participate in limited-overs domestic tournaments, the upcoming One-Day event may result in them missing the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2026, scheduled to be played from August 7 to September 20.
Notably, several national players, including Sahibzada Farhan, Saim Ayub, Sufiyan Muqeem, Saad Masood, Salman Irshad and Usman Khan, were required to obtain a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the PCB to participate in the CPL 2026.
Meanwhile, emerging left-handed opener Maaz Sadaqat, who was already given the NOC to participate in the CPL 2026, has also become uncertain to feature in the league, sources said.
For the unversed, Sadaqat was among 14 national players given the NOC to participate in different overseas franchise leagues, most prominently the Global Super League (GSL) 2026, which will feature 13 Pakistani cricketers.
The five-team competition, which will also feature the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 11 champions Lahore Qalandars, is slated to be played at the Providence Stadium in Guyana from July 23 to August 1, and thus is unlikely to be affected by the national players' unavailability due to the upcoming domestic One-Day tournament.
